The game follows the story of Dante, a former Crusader, as he embarks on a harrowing journey through the nine circles of Hell to rescue his beloved Beatrice from the clutches of Lucifer.
The plot begins with Dante returning from the Crusades to find his hometown of Florence ravaged by the Black Death. Amidst the chaos, Beatrice is murdered, and her soul is taken by Lucifer, who claims her for his own. Driven by love and guilt, Dante makes a desperate deal with Death to traverse the depths of Hell in an attempt to save Beatrice's soul.
